TikTok Provides Users Power to Decrease AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a updated setting that allows them to lessen the amount of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This move comes as the company revealed that it now features more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This development comes amid a rise in AI content, fueled by recent video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that almost a tenth of the quickest rising video streams on a popular video site exclusively feature content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is classified as “AI slop”, a label for inferior, bulk-generated content that is frequently absurd or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers appreciate content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” stated a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network identified as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the platform each day, making AI content a relatively small part of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of artificial media they see by opening the content preference feature in the application and picking AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the tool encompass news, style, cosmetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its rules mandate creators to identify “realistic” AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous AI impersonations of public figures or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is unmarked can be taken down under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will from now on attach an AI-generated label to content produced via its built-in AI features, or identified by an cross-platform project for identifying content made by AI. This measure is intended to deter users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also launching a $2 million educational fund for experts and organizations to create educational content about ethical AI use. This initiative will support educational bodies specializing in teaching computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has supported its moderation strategy, during discussion over intentions to lay off numerous review team members in the UK. It is set to eliminate 439 jobs in its content moderation department in London, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would remain essential, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most harmful content prior to it gets reviewed by humans. The platform announced a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
