The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the US president started showing the public his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis projected his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with the government.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' into 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the established notion regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler arising; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for others, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you should give him your sweater also.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior from scripture calls for a kind of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best Among Us
So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged voters to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the highest qualities of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or refuse?
The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to what makes it distinctive and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean feigning the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith never occurred; it represents both humility and belief, a combination that genuine national faithful should embrace.
