In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
