A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
